Rod Smith
IBM Fellow and VP Internet Emerging Technology

Title: Enterprise Mashups: An Industry Case Study

Date/Time: June 15th @ 8:15am - 9:15am

Abstract: In this session, Rod Smith will discuss the evolution of the web application paradigm that is being fueled by the extreme popularity of blogs, wikis and AJAX, creating new ways of interacting and truly enabling the read/write web. These technologies are evolving to enable the next wave of do-it-yourself (DIY) programming. Web 2.0 technologies can now help to reduce the barrier of entry for web application programmers by combining the flexibility of user-oriented information architecture provided by active content (such as wikis) with that of content-in-flight (such as web services and RSS feeds) to provide an easy-to-use integration platform for creating a new style of content-centric applications.

Situational Applications, or mashups, are the artifacts of the DIY programatical web. Rod will present how IBM has leveraged technologies like Wikis, Atom, Ajax and PHP to provide a robust development environment that enable enterprise mashups. We will demonstrate the applicability of IBM's technology using a case study from the Media Industry where situational applications are business as usual for journalists and production editors/directors.

As businesses begin to leverage the web as the application platform, DIY programming environments will be the catalysts for enabling end users to create Enterprise Mashups by aggregating and filtering disparate fragments of the evolving data platform more effectively than traditional database-centric applications.
